Reading Comprehension Practice Paper for Upcoming Bank Tests

Directions for Questions 1 to 5 : Read the following passage carefully and choose the best answer for questions that follow it.

Viswanathan Anand may not be the most dominant chess player of this era like Bobby Fischer in the early 1970's, Anatoli Karpov in the early 1980's or Garry Kasparov for most of the 1990's. Anad, however, is only the second non-Russian to win the coveted Chess Oscar three times, the first being Fischer. The Chess Oscar conducted every year by the Russian magazine 64 and the winner is elected from a poll involving the most respected chess writers, journalists and critics from 50 countries. Anand has just been voted as the best player of 2008, having earlier won the Chess Oscar for 1997,1998, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008. Nine-time Chess Oscar winner Kasparov has been placed fourth for 2003, way behind Anand. In 2003, Anand played two major  classical events, winning the Corus Grandmaster's event at Wijk aan Zee and finishing second in the Sparkassen at Dortmund.

Without dominating the game like Fischer and Kasparov, Anand's performance has struck a chord among the chess cognoscenti. Chess champions were regarded as eccentric geniuses whose fans had to put up with their tantrums just for the privilege of watching them play. Fischer insisted during his successful 1972 world title bout with Spassky that the TV cameras be switched off and forfeited a game just to get his way. During his successful title play-off with Anand some years age, Kasparov repeatedly banged the door while leaving the room after each move in a bid to upset the Indian. Anand has always conducted himself with grace and dignity. He has been a champion in more way than one.

1) Who was the first non-Russian to win the coveted Chess Oscar ?

  1. Viswanathan Anand
  2. Anatoly Karpov
  3. Garry Kasparov
  4. Fischer

2) How many times did Viswanathan Anand won the Chess Oscar ?

  1. Only once
  2. Five times
  3. Six times
  4. Twice

3) ' He has been a champion in more ways than one' means

  1. Viswanathan Anand won many coveted titles.
  2. Apart from being a chess champion, Viswanathan Anand is a gentleman.
  3. Viswanathan Anand has grace and dignity.
  4. Viswanathan Anand never played for the sake of becoming famous.

4) ' Forfeited' in the second paragraph means

  1. Lost or surrendered
  2. Left
  3. Cancelled
  4. Verified

5) Why is Viswanathan Anand a positive inspiration to the next generation of chess players ?
  1. He shows no starry tantrums.
  2. He retains his composure.
  3. He does not try to dominate the game.
  4. All the above.

Data Interpretation Practice Paper set 2 with Solutions for SBI PO 2014

Directions For Questions 1 to 5 These questions are based on the following Graph.

1) In 1985, what percentage of the votes polled by the female voters were invalid?

  1. 5.8%
  2. 41.3%
  3. 17.6%
  4. 56.7%

2) What was the percentage increase in the number of valid votes from 1995 to 2000 ?

  1. 15.7%
  2. 16.3%
  3. 17.6%
  4. 18.8%

3) During which of the following years was the percentage of invalid votes in the total number of votes polled, the least ?

  1. 1985
  2. 1990
  3. 1995
  4. 2000

4) What was the difference between the number of valid votes by males and that polled by females in 2000 ?

  1. 2 millions
  2. 5 millions
  3. 7 millions
  4. 15 millions

5) During which of the following years was the ratio of number of votes polled by males to that polled by females, the greatest ?

  1. 1985
  2. 1990
  3. 1995
  4. 2000

Solutions:

1st Question

Number of invalid votes by the female voters = number of votes polled by the females- number of valid votes polled by the females.

= (453-226)-187=227-187=40 millions.

The required percentage=(40/227)X100=17.6%

ans:- Choice 3

2nd Question

Valid votes in 1995= valid votes polled by males+valid votes polled by females= 233+219=452.
Valid votes in 2000=269+254=523
Percentage increase= (523-452)/452 X100= 15.7%

Ans:- Choice 1

3rd Question

Invalid votes= total number of votes polled - total number of valid votes polled by males and females.
Invalid votes in 1985= 453-(187+196)=70.
The required ratio in 1985= 70/453=1/6
Similarly the required ratio in 1990= 72/503=1/7
In 1995=131/583= 1/4
In 2000= 148/671=1/4

1/7 is the least. Hence the required percentage is the least in 1990.

Ans:- Choice 2

4th Question

Number of invalid votes polled by males= 329-254=75 millions.
Number of invalid votes by the females=(671-329)-269)= 73 millions.
The required difference = 75-73= 2 millions.

Ans:- Choice 1

5th Question

The ratio of number of votes polled by males to the total number of votes polled will hold good for a comparison of the ratio of the number of votes polled by males to that polled by female.
Therefore the required ratio In 1985 = 226/453 = 1/2
In 1990 = 248/503
In 1995= 281/583
In 2000= 329/671
226/453 is much closer to half where as other fractions are much less that 1/2.
Hence the ratio in 1985 was the greatest.

Ans:- Choice 1

Data Interpretation Practice Paper for SBI PO 2014

Direction for Questions 1 to 5 : These questions are based on the graph given below

Production and demand of steel from 1997 through 2002 (in Million tonnes)

   For any year, Surplus= Production+Demand-Exports

1). In which year, the ratio of production to demand is highest?

  1. 1998
  2. 1999
  3. 1997
  4. 2001

2) In 1996, the demand is 22% less than that in 1997. What is the approximate production (in million tonnes) in 1996 if the ratio of demand to production is 4:11?

  1. 78
  2. 75
  3. 72
  4. 64

3) In which year is the demand, as a percentage of the production, the highest?

  1. 2000
  2. 2001
  3. 1998
  4. 1997

4) If there is no surplus up to the year 1996, then what is the total surplus of steel (in million tonnes) by the end of 2000? (Assume that the total exports from 1997 to 2000 is 8 million tonnes and that there are no imports)

  1. 38
  2. 22
  3. 45
  4. 30

5) In 1999 the cost of production per unit is 20% more than that in 1998. What is the ratio of the total cost of production in 1998 to that in 1999?

  1. 4:3
  2. 1:3
  3. 3:4
  4. 3:1

Solutions for Questions 1 to 5:

Question 1:

By observation we can say that in 1999, the ratio of production to demand is the highest.

 Ans:-Choice 2

Question 2:

  Demand is 1996=(100-22/100)*30
       = 23.4 million tonnes
Production in 1996=(23.4)11/4 = 64.35 million tonnes

Ans:- Choice 4

Question 3:

Only in 2000, the demand is more than the production. So in that year the demand as a percentage of production is the highest.

Ans:- Choice 1

Question 4:

Production of steel from 1997 to 2000 = 40+45+50+40+=175 million tonnes

Demand of steel from 1997 to 2000 = 30+32+30+45= 137 million tones
Exports from 1997 to 2000 = 8 million tones
Surplus of steel up to 2000 = 15 - (137+8) = 30 millions tonnes

Ans:- Choice 4

Question 5:

Let the cost of production in 1998 be Rs X per million tonne.

Required ration=(X)(45):(1.2X)(50)= 3:4

Ans:- Choice 3
