Data Sufficiency Practice Paper with Solutions for Upcoming Competitive Exams
(Based on Time and Work, Time and Distance)Directions for Questions 1 to 5 : Each problem contains a question and two statements which give certain data. You have to select the correct answer from (1) to (4) depending on the sufficiency of the data given in the statement to answer the question.
Option 1: If statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question and statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question
Options 2 : If statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question and statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question
Option 3: If statement I and II together are sufficient to answer to answer the question, but neither statement alone is sufficient.
Option 4: If statement I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question and additional data specific to the problem are needed.
1) Among B and C, who is more efficient ?
I. A and B can complete a job in 12 days.
II. A and C can complete the same job in 18 days.
2) Find the time taken by a train to cross a bridge of length 200 m.
I. The length of the train is 50 m.
II. The time taken by the train to cross a tunnel of length 80 m is 8 seconds.
3) How long will B alone take to complete the job ?
I. B takes 4 times the time that A and C together take to complete the job.
II. A, B and C together complete the job in 9 days.
4) A, B and C complete a piece of work and earn Rs. 740. by how much is B's share more than A's share ?
I. A and C together complete 15/37 the of the total work.
II. B and C together complete 29/37 th of the total work.
5) Find the speed of the man.
I. The man completes one rotation along the circumference of a circle of radius 7 m in 12 minutes.
II. The area of the circle is 154 Sq.m.
Solutions:
Questions 1:
Combining both the statement, it can be concluded that B is more efficient than C, as the work done by B in one day is more than that of C by 1/36.
Ans:- Option 3
Question 2:
Using both the statements, the speed of the train can be found and then the question can be answered.
Ans:- Option 3
Question 3:
From statement I, let the time taken by A and C be x days.
There fore Time taken by B = 4x Days
Statement II alone is not sufficient as the ratio of their efficiencies is not given,
Using both the statements, we get (1/4x)+(1/x) = 1/9
Hence, the value of x can be found.
Ans:- Option 3
Question 4:
Let A's share, B's share and C's share be A, B and C respectively
Statement I alone is not sufficient, as the work done by A cannot be found.
Statement II alone is not sufficient, as the work done by B cannot be found.
Using the both Statements;
A + C = (15/37)740 = 300 -----equ 1
B + C = (29/37)740 = 580 ------equ 2
From equ 1 and equ 2 we get A-B = -280.
Hence B's share is Rs. 280 more than A's share.
Ans- Option 3.
Question 5:
Using the Statement I alone, the distance covered by the man can be found using 2πr. As the time taken to cover this distance is given, the speed of the man can be calculated.
Ans:- Option 1
