Gandhi's Salt March:

Mahatma Gandhi's march to Dandi in 1930 saw him and 78 satyagrahis walk for 23 days and 386 kilometers to collect tax-free salt from the coast. After prayers were offered and speaking to his followers, he picked up tiny lump of salt and broke the law.





King's Speech:

August 28, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's historic ' I Have a Dream' speech that was delivered during his civil rights rally in the United States. More than 200,000 demonstrators gathered peacefully at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC.

The Orange Revolution:

Hundreds of thousands of people flooded Kiev's main square to protest the result of the Ukrainian presidential election in late 2004. Demonstrations continued for 12 days until a re vote was called reversing the results.

Benazir's Return to Pakistan:

After martial law ended in December 1985, Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan in april 1986, and was greeted approximately 3 million supporters of the People's Party of Pakistan. It took her motorcade 10 hours to travel 12 kms from the airport to the center of Lahore.

Drug King's:

Peru has displaced Colombia as the Largest producer of the Coca leaf, the raw material for cocaine, according to the UN office on Drugs and Crime. Although the area under coca in Peru fell slightly in 2012, to 60,400 hectares, it dropped more in Colombia.

Busiest Metro Network:

The Moscow Metro in Russia carries 8-9 million passengers each day. By comparison, the New York City Subway, USA carries 4.5 million people each day and the London Underground, UK, carries just over 3 million.

Warren Edward Buffett (USA), chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, is the world's richest investor, estimated to be worth $53.5 billion as of March 2013.




First Oil Tanker:

Motilal Nehru, the first oil tanker made by Cochin Shipyard Ltd., was delivered to Shipping Corporation of India on October 9, 1990. Its length was 238 meters.

Bimal Mukherjee:

Bimal Mukherjee was the first Indian globe-trotter who travelled the entire world on a bicycle. He set out on his bicycle from Kolkata in 1926 and completed his journey in 1937.

Gandhi's Engels:

Pranjivan Mehta was in many ways an Engels to Gandhi's Marx - his closest friend, his financial backer, the person most confident of his greatness. He was the first to call Gandhi a 'Mahatma'.

Prasar Bharati Bill:

Prasar Bharati Bill, 1989 that granted autonomous status to Akashvani (Radio) and Doordarshan (Television) was passed in 1990.

Light Combat Aircraft:

The first indigenously built tailless single engine Light Combat Aircraft rolled out of assembly hanger of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., Bangalore on November 17, 1995.

First Cellular Service:

The first cellular phone service in India was introduced by Modi Telstra on August 23, 1995 in Calcutta under the name Mobile Net.




National Sports Day:  

August 29, 1995 was for the first time declared National Sports Day, it begin the 90th birthday of hockey wizard Dhyan Chand.






Rapid Action Force:

Rapid Action Force, a central force, was raised on October 7, 1992 to quell communal and intercaste riots anywhere in India.

First Submarine:

The first indigenously built submarine 'INS Shalki' joined the Navy on February 7, 1992. The name comes from a fish in the Andaman Sea.

First Indian Woman on Everest:

Bachendri Pal, an employee of Tata Iron and Steel Co. Ltd at Jamshedpur, become the first Indian and the fifth woman in the world to reach the summit of Mt.Everest on May 23, 1984. Santosh Yadav was the second Indian woman to achieve the feat on May 12, 1992.

Judge for Two Hours:

Justice Narain Dutt Ojha made sort of a record when he was sworn in as a Judge of Supreme Court on January 19, 1987 at 10.00 p.m. at the residence of the Chief Justice of India, only to retire two hours later.


City with Most Bridges:

Hamburg, Germany, is located on the River Elbe at the point where it meets the Bille and Alster rivers. The canals, rivers and streams within the city are crossed by a total of 2,302 bridges- more than the cities of Venice and Amsterdam combined.

Largest Car Park:

The World's largest car park can hold 20,000 vehicles and is situated at the West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. There are overflow facilities on an adjoining car park for 10,000 more vehicles.

City with Most Billionaires:

According to Forbes, the Russian capital Moscow currently boasts an unprecedented 84 billionaires. Between them, the Moscow billionaires share a total of $366 billion. The richest Muscovite- and Russia's richest man- is the steel magnate Vladimir Lisin.
