Republic Of India Ministry Of Defence

The Ministry of Defence is charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government relating directly to national security and the Indian armed forces and has the largest budget of the federal departments of India.

A Military Department was created by the Supreme Government of the British East India Company at Kolkata in the year 1776. It main function was to co-ordinate and record orders, relating to Army, issued by various Departments of the Government of the East India Company. On August 15, 1947, each service was placed under its own Commander-in-Chief. Under the Constitution, the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces was vested in the President. In 1955, the title of Commander-in-chief was abolished and the three Service Chiefs were designated as the Chief of the Army Staff, the Chief of the Naval Staff and the Chief of the Air Staff.

The Armed Forces are primarily responsible for ensuring the territorial of the nation. The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Country. The Ministry of Defence provides policy framework and resources to the Armed Forces to discharge their responsibility in the context of the defence of the country.

The Army:


The Indian Army's Head Quarter is located in New Delhi and functions under the Chief of Army Staff(COAS), who is responsible for the command, control and administration as a whole. The Army is divided into six operational commands (field armies) and one training command.

Personnel in Army: 980,000 active troops.
Army Reserves: 300,000 first line troops.

Air Force:

The Indian Air Force was officially established on 8 October 1932. Its first flight took place on 01 April 1933.

Operational commands They are: Western Air Command, South-Western Air Command, Central Air Command, Eastern Air Command and Southern Air Command. In addition, there are two functional commands-Maintenance Command and Training Command. The Air Force Headquarters is in New Delhi.

Navy:


The Navy is responsible for defence and security of India's maritime interests and assets, both in times of war and peace. Our offshore assets within the Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ) of 2.02 million sq. kms, oil and natural gas, fisheries and deep sea interests, major and minor harbours and overall seaward security of 7,517km long coastline and island territories are other vital aspects of our maritime dimension and Navy's responsibilities. Coast Guard:

The Coast Guard came into being on 01 February 1977 and was constituted as an independent Armed Force of the Union of India with the enactment of CG Act 1978 on 18 August 1978 with its motto as 'Vayam Rakshamah'.
The Charter of Duties includes:
(a) Safety and protection of offshore installations and maritime environment.
(b) Assisting Customs in anti-smuggling operations.
Coast Guards has 10,000 personnels in 29 stations.
