National & International Current Affairs:

  • The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 27 September 2014 addressed the 69th session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. He addressed the 193-member UN General Assembly in Hindi becoming the second Prime Minister after Atal Behari Vajpayee who was a Prime Minister from 1998 to 2004.
  • Union Government declared 25 September as Antyodya Diwas. Antyodya diwas was observed to mark the 98th birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay.   
  • Union Government on 25 September 2014 launched Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Antyodaya Yojana for urban and rural poor. The Yojana aims at alleviating urban and rural poverty through enhancement of livelihood opportunities through skill development and other means.
  • Union government on 25 September 2014 launched Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana. The Yojana was launched by Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Rural Development during the National Convention on Skills for Rural and Urban Poor held in New Delhi.
  • On 24 September 2014 as the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) entered the Martian orbit India created history. 
It became the first Asian nation and third country in the world after US and erstwhile Soviet Union (USSR) to achieve this feat. Besides ISRO became the fourth space agency after NASA, European Space Agency and Space Agency of erstwhile USSR. To insert the spacecraft into the orbit the operation was started at scheduled time 07:17:32 am when its Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) was fired for 24 minutes 16 seconds.
  • TN Suresh Kumar on 15 August 2014 became the first Indian to visit to the stratosphere, the second layer of the Earth’s atmosphere. He traveled to an altitude of 17100 meters in MIG-29 from Sokol Airbase near Nizhny Novgorod in Russia. During the travel to reach the stratosphere in 48 minutes, the aircraft reached to a maximum speed of 1850 km per hour.
  • Pope Francis on 17 September 2014 approved the canonisation of Blessed Joseph Vaz as Saint. Pope approved the vote by the Ordinary Session of Cardinals and Bishops in favor of canonization of the Indian-born priest and decided to summon a Consistory shortly.
  • Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai on 29 september 2014 was sworn in as president of Afghanistan. The sworn in ceremony was held at the presidential palace in Kabul.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 24 September 2014 inaugurated India Food Park at Tumkur in Karnataka. Through this park, Indian farmers will get access to global markets.Moreover, Food Processing Ministry will approve 17 such food parks across the country over the next few months attracting investments of about 2100 crore rupees. Each park is estimated to attract a minimum investment of about 125 crore rupees.
  • World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on 30 September 2014 released the Living Planet Report 2014. The theme of the report is Species and Spaces, People and Places.
The report provides the data compiled on over 10000 vertebrate species populations from 1970 to 2010 through the Living Planet Index - a database maintained by the Zoological Society of London.The report also includes WWF’s One Plant Perspective with strategies to preserve, produce and consume more wisely.

  • J Jayalalithaa, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 27 September 2014 was found guilty in the disproportionate assets case by the Special Court in Bangalore. The Court pronounced a jail term of 4 years and fined 100 crore rupees to her. The judgment of the 18-year-old 66.65 crore rupees disproportionate assets case against Jayalalitha was pronounced by the special court in Bangalore amid tight security.

  • Ancient Nalanda University (NU) was formally inaugurated after 800 years on 19 September 2014 by Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in Rajgir near Nalanda, Bihar. 
  • Rajasthan became the first Indian state to ratify the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Bill 2014. The Bill was unanimously passed by the Legislative Assembly of Rajasthan on 17 September 2014.
  • Pakistan on 26 September 2014 test fired the Hatf IX -short range surface-to-surface missile. The nuclear capable missile also called as Nasr was tested with successive launches of four missiles from a Multi Tube Launcher with Salvo Mode.
  • The India-US Combined Military Training Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2014 concluded at Ranikhet in Uttarakhand on 30 September 2014. The Yudh Abhyas 2014 started on 17 September 2014. 
It was the tenth exercise in the Yudh Abhyas series that started in 2004 under US Army Pacific partnership program. Yudh Abhyas 2014, a part of bilateral defence cooperation, aimed at sharing of ideas, concepts and learning from each other’s experiences.
  • Volcano Mount Ontake in Japan erupted on 27 September 2014 killing more than 30 people and injuring as many people.
  • India announced to contribute 12 million US dollars to the United Nations to fight the deadly Ebola virus in Africa. The contribution was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 September 2014.
  • State Bank of India (SBI) and Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India (ICICI) on 24 September 2014 allowed kids to operate bank accounts independently.The bank account is available for all kids above 10 who can sign uniformly. A uniform signature is a prerequisite since the banks are not making any allowance in signature variation for children and cheques can be returned where signatures do not match.
  • The Reserve Bank of India on 24 September 2014 released Gopalakrishna Committee report on Capacity Building in banks and non-banks.  The committee has recommended a 360-degree feedback for a transparent and comprehensive performance assessment exercise, one that ensures adequate performance differentiation between employees.
  • The Narula brothers of Delhi on 20 September 2014 became the first ever contestants to win 7 crore rupees in the television show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan. The two brothers, Achin and Sarthak Narula emerged victorious in Season 8 of the show after answering 14 questions correctly, with help of four lifelines.
  • John Key on 21 September 2014 was re-elected as the Prime Minister of New Zealand for a third term. This was revealed by the preliminary results released by the Electoral Commission of New Zealand. He has led New Zealand as the Prime Minister since 2008. 
  • The Sixth Delhi Economic Census 2013 was released on 19 September 2014.  The economic census was released by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics of Delhi Government.
  • Miss Kira Kazantsev on 14 September 2014 won the Miss America pageant. She belongs to New York.
  • The Supreme Court on 12 September 2014 ruled 3 percent quota for disabled persons in all government jobs, including Indian Administrative Services (IAS), and promotions.
  •  Puducherry Chief Minister N.Rangasamy on 11 September 2014 presented a tax free budget for 2014-15 financial year. The total budget of 6100 crore rupees included the plan outlay of 2400 crore rupees and non-plan outlay of 3700 crore rupees.
  • Strategic Force Command (SFC) of India on 11 September 2014 successfully test-fired nuclear weapons capable ballistic missile Agni-I.
  • The National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill, 2014 and the 121st Constitutional Amendment Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on 13 March 2014. Earlier on 12 March 2014 the two bills were passed by the Lok Sabha by voice vote.



  • Indian Telugu Actor, Akkineni Nageswara Rao became the first Indian actor to be honoured with a postage stamp by the US Post Service (USPS). It was announced by the Akkineni Foundation of America (AFA) on 30 August 2014.






Business Deals:

  • Economic Outlook Survey of FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) was released on 13 September 2014. The Survey estimated that India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to expand by 5.6 percent during financial year 2014-15.
  • Kotak Mahindra Bank on 29 September 2014 acquired 15 percent stake of Financial Technologies (India) Ltd (FTIL) in Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) for 459 crore rupees. Kotak Bank acquired MCX shares at about 664 rupees a piece.After the Forward Markets Commission declared FTIL as unfit to hold stake in the commodity exchange, FTIL was forced to offload its holding in the exchange.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced fourth Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy Statement on 30 September 2014. RBI in its fourth bi-monthly monetary policy statement has kept the policy rates unchanged at 8 percent.
The Repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 8.0 per cent.The cash reserve ratio (CRR) of scheduled banks unchanged at 4.0 per cent of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL).Reduced the Statutory Liquidity Ratio under the export credit refinance (ECR) facility from 32 per cent of eligible export credit outstanding to 15 per cent with effect from 10 October 2014.Continue to provide liquidity under overnight repos at 0.25 per cent of bank-wise NDTL at the LAF repo rate and liquidity under 7-day and 14-day term repos of up to 0.75 per cent of NDTL of the banking system through auctions.The reverse repo rate under the LAF remained unchanged at 7.0 per cent and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate at 9.0 per cent.This is the fourth consecutive time that the RBI has kept key interest rates unchanged despite clamours from the industry to cut rates to boost economy. RBI Governor Raghu Ramrajan cited WPI inflation as the rationale for the status quo policy.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 14 September 2014 closed down six Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs). These UCBs were suspected of being used to route illegal money, but RBI did not disclose the names of these six UCBs. 
  • The Forbes India magazine released The 100 Richest Indian List 2014 on 25 September 2014. As per the list, the top 100 richest tycoons in India are all billionaires for the first time. The combined net worth of 100 richest tycoons in India is 346 billion US dollars in 2014 up more than a third from 259 billion US dollars in 2013.
According to the Forbes India List, the Top 10 Richest people of India: 1. Mukesh Ambani; 2. Dilip Shanghvi; 3. Azim Premji; 4. Pallonji Mistry; 5. Lakshmi Mittal; 6. Hinduja brothers; 7. Shiv Nadar; 8. Godrej family; 9. Kumar Birla; 10. Sunil Mittal
  • State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest lender on 26 September 2014 announced that it has signed a Line of Credit (LoC) of 500 million dollar with Export-Import Bank of Korea (Korea Eximbank).  
  • ICICI (Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India) launched a Cardless Cash Withdrawal service on 10 September 2014. The service allows its customers to transfer money from their account to anyone in India with a mobile number. The recipient can withdraw without a debit card or even a bank account.

  • Infosys Ltd on 18 September 2014 signed three partnership agreements with Microsoft Corporation, Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) and China-based telecom vendor Huawei individually.
  • The Swedish company Electrolux agreed to buy a home-appliances unit of General Electric Company of Louisville for 3.3 billion US dollars in cash. The agreement was done on 8 September 2014. This acquisition would enable Electrolux to compete with Whirlpool in US Market. 
  • The Andhra Pradesh (AP) Government on 29 September 2014 signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement with Google India for Digital AP project. The agreement was signed at the CEOs’ Conclave of Information Technology (IT) companies in AP.
  • Tata Group company Croma and Snapdeal.com on 16 September 2014 tied up to sell electronic goods online. This omni-channel retail association will enable Croma and Snapdeal to leverage from each other's strengths.

Sports:

  • Leander Paes and Marcin Matkowski on 28 September 2014 won the ATP Malaysian Open men’s doubles title. The fourth seeded Indo-Polish duo defeated the second seed Briton-Australian partner, Jamie Murray and John Peers 3-6, 7-6(5), 10-5 in the summit clash played at Kuala Lumpur. 
  • Europe on 28 September 2014 won the 40th Ryder Cup in Gleneagles, Scotland. Europe defeated United States by 16½ points to 11½. The team captains were Paul McGinley for Europe and Tom Watson for the USA.Europe took 10-6 lead over the United States into final day of Ryder Cup.




  • Sardar Singh on 19 September 2014 became India's flag bearer at 17th Asian Games opening. Sardar Singh is the captain of Indian Hockey team.







  • The Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) Working Committee on 26 September 2014 extended Ravi Shastri’s tenure as Director of Indian Cricket team till end of 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. The ICC Cricket World Cup is to be played in Australia and New Zealand from 14 February to 29 March 2015. 
  • International Cricket Council (ICC) on 23 September 2014 announced that ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 3 will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The World Cricket League Division 3 will be held from 23 to 30 October 2014.
  • USA on 14 September 2014 won FIBA Basketball World Cup 2014 by defeating Serbia. The World Cup was held at Madrid, Spain.
  • American twin brothers Mike and Bob Bryan on 7 September 2014 won the men’s doubles titles of the US Tennis Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, USA.
  • Croatia’s Marin Cilic on 8 September 2014 won the Men’s Singles title of the US Open of Tennis. To win his first Grand Slam title, the 14th seed Cilic defeated 10th seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. The final match of the title was played at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
  • Serena Williams on 7 September 2014 won her third consecutive Tennis US Open trophy. To win her third consecutive title and to secure a record-equaling sixth US Open title in US Open, Williams defeated Caroline Wozniazki of Denmark in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
  • India’s Sania Mirza and her Brazilian teammate Bruno Soares on 5 September 2014 won the Mixed Doubles trophy of the US Open Tennis. In the title clash, the top seeded, Indo-Brazilian pair defeated the American-Mexican team of Abigail Spears and Santiago Gonzalez, 6-1, 2-6, 11-9. The US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season.

  • Jaipur Pink Panther (JPP) owned by Abhisek Bachchan on 31 August 2014 won the inaugural title of the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi League. To win its first title of the tournament, Jaipur Pink Panther defeated U Mumba 35-24 at the NSCI Stadium in Mumbai. 



Appointments:

  • AIADMK Treasurer O Panneerselvam was sworn-in as Chief Minister (CM) of Tamil Nadu on 29 September 2014. 




He replaced the former AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa.He is the 28th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu since 1920. Along with Panneerselvam, the State Cabinet was also sworn-in by the Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah.







  • India TV chairman and editor-in-chief Rajat Sharma on 24 September 2014 was appointed as the new president of the News Broadcasting Association (NBA) for the year 2014-2015.
  • Amit Mathew on 22 September 2014 was unanimously elected as Chairman of Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) for the year 2014-15. He is the resident editor and director of Malyala Manorama.
  • Narendra Ambwani on 12 September 2014 elected as Chairman of the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI). 
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 22 September 2014 approved the appointment of V.G. Mathew as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kerala-based South Indian Bank Ltd.

  • Lalitha Kumaramangalam was appointed as chairperson of National Commission for Women (NCW). She was appointed by the Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Menaka Gandhi on 17 September 2014. She is the eighth chairperson of NCW.



  • Senior IAS officer Subhash Chandra Garg was appointed as the Executive Director (ED) of World Bank on 10 September 2014. An order issued by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) said that Garg will have tenure of three years from the date of assuming charge of the post. 
  • The International Economic Association (IEA) on 16 September 2014 appointed Kaushik Basu as president-elect of the association beginning September 2014. However, he will continue to serve as Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of World Bank.
  • Lieutenant General Rizwan Akhtar on 22 September 2014 was appointed as the new head of the Pakistan’s spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). He will replace Lt-Gen Zaheerul Islam who is scheduled to retire in October 2014.
  • Justice Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu was sworn-in as the 42nd Chief Justice of India on 28 September 2014. He was administered the oath of office by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan. He succeeded Chief Justice RM Lodha who demitted office on 27 September 2014. Dattu will have tenure of 14 months as the Chief Justice of India as he will retire from his office on 2 December 2015.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 17 September 2014 appointed former McKinsey India Chairman Adil Zainulbhai as the Chairman of Quality Council of India (QCI)
  • The Bangladesh government on 28 September 2014 appointed Syed Muazzem Ali as the new Bangladesh High Commissioner to India. Syed Muazzem Ali will replace Tariq A. Karim who served as the Bangladesh High Commissioner to India from 2009 to 2014.


  • Hardeep Singh Puri was appointed as Secretary General of Independent Commission on Multilateralism (ICM) on 23 September 2014. He is a former Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations.






  • Actor Leonardo DiCaprio was appointed as United Nations Messenger of Peace with a special focus on climate change. He was appointed by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 16 September 2014.
  • Engineering and information technology company Tata Technologies Ltd on 9 September 2014 appointed Warren Harris as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of the company. 
  • V Nagarajan on 4 September 2014 took over as Director (Commercial) of Indraprastha Gas Ltd. (IGL). 

Awards:

  • CSIR on 26 September 2014 announced the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards 2014 for ten scientists in recognition of their work. The awards were announced by Director General of Council for Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) Dr. Paramvir Singh Ahuja during the CSIR’s 72nd Foundation day celebrations in New Delhi.

  • Govind Mishra, the renowned Hindi author was given the Saraswati Samman in New Delhi on 23 September 2014. He was given the Samman by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh for his novel Dhool Paudhon Par that was published in 2008.  





  • Sukinda Chromite Mine of the Tata Steel in Odisha on 24 September 2014 won the Asian Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Leadership Award. The Sukinda mine of Tata Steels won the award for Community Development. The award was presented by World CSR Congress at Dubai, UAE.
  • Former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden and Alan Rusbridger, editor of The Guardian on 24 September 2014 won Right Livelihood Award. The award was shared between the two.
  • Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and Steve Waugh of Australia were selected as Bradman Honouree 2014. It was announced by The Bradman Foundation on 22 September 2014. They will be honoured at the Gala Dinner of the Bradman Foundation on 29 October 2014 in Sydney.
  • Noted writer and filmmaker Madathil Thekkepaattu (MT) Vasudevan Nair on 23 September 2014 was selected for the JC Daniel Award for lifetime achievement for the year 2013. The award given by the Kerala government recognises the overall contribution of MT to the Malayalam film industry.
  •  Hindi-language feature film Liar's Dice on 23 September 2014 was selected for India’s official entry in the 2015 Oscars Awards. The film is directed by Geethu Mohandas. The 87th Oscar Awards event will take place in the US on 22 February 2015.
  • Dr. Kamal Bawa, an Indian Scientist, on 8 September 2014 won the MIDORI Prize in Biodiversity 2014. Bawa was honoured for his research that included climate change in the Himalayas. 

  • China on 5 September 2014 awarded China Book Award to JNU professor Priyadarsi Mukherji.Priyadarsi Mukherji was honoured in recognition of his long-term contribution to the translation and publication of Chinese works.




  • Vinod Mehta, eminent journalist and Editorial Chairman of Outlook group, was selected for G K Reddy Memorial Award 2014. The award was announced by the TSR Foundation on 2 September 2014 and the award will be presented in New Delhi in December 2014.




Days:

27 September: World Tourism Day
World Tourism Day (WTD) was observed across the world on 27 September 2014. The theme of the World Tourism Day 2014 is Tourism and Community Development. The 2014 WTD is focused to highlight the ability of tourism to empower people and provide them with skills to achieve change in their local communities.
29 September: World Heart Day
World Heart Day was observed across the world on 29 September 2014. The objective of the day is to inform people around the world of the danger of heart disease and stroke.

28 September-Gunners Day

Gunners Day was observed on 28 September 2014. This is the 187th Gunners Day.Gunners Day is also called as Raising Day is observed to mark the raising of the first Indian Artillery unit, 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery that was equipped with 2.5 inch Rifled Muzzle-Loading (RML) guns. It was raised on 28 September in 1827.
16 September: International Day for the preservation of the Ozone Layer
The International Day for the preservation of the Ozone Layer was observed on 16 September 2014.The day marks the commemoration of the date of signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987 on substances that deplete the Ozone layer. The theme for 2014 is Ozone Layer Protection: The Mission Goes On. 
14 September: National Hindi Divas
National Hindi Divas (Hindi Day) was observed across India on 14 September 2014. The day was observed to promote the Matra Bhasha – the mother tongue of India and show its importance as a language in the country. 
8 August-World Literacy Day

World Literacy Day was observed across the world on 8 September 2014. The theme of International Literacy Day 2014 is Literacy and Sustainable Development. The aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individual, communities and societies. On this day, UNESCO reminds the international community of status of literacy and adult learning.
Retirements:

  • The 41st Chief Justice of India (CJI), Rajendra Mal Lodha retired on 27 September 2014. He retired after serving as the CJI for five months.  
  • Prithviraj Chavan on 26 September 2014 resigned as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra after his government was reduced to a minority. Chavan submitted his resignation to governor of the state C Vidyasagar Rao.
  • B Muthuraman, Vice-Chairman of Tata Steel retired from the Board of the company on 26 September 2014 after attaining the age of 70. He retired as per the company’s retirement policy.
  • China's Grand Slam winner Li Na on 19 September 2014 announced her retirement at the age of 32. She is Asia's greatest and most influential tennis player.

  • Pankaj Advani on 5 September 2014 announced to retire from the professional snooker tour. He decided to retire as he was finding it difficult to divide the time between billiards and snooker. However, he will continue to participate in Billiards.






Deaths:

  • A former NASA chief scientist Dr. Noel W. Hinners died on 5 September 2014 due to brain tumor. He was 78.He was involved in the scientific exploration of the moon for the Apollo program and later oversaw projects such as the Mars Surveyor Program.
  • Former International cricket umpire Mohammad Ghouse died on 29 September 2014 following a brief illness. He was 83.
  • Bhagat Singh’s last surviving sister Bibi Prakash Kaur died. Bibi Prakash Kaur, the last surviving real sister of martyr Bhagat Singh died on 28 September 2014 in Canada. She was 94. 

  • Music Maestro Mandolin player Uppalapu Srinivas died on 19 September 2014 in Chennai. He died following a failed liver transplant at the age of 45. He is now survived by his father, mother, a sister and brother Rajesh, who is also a mandolin player.



  •  Yoshiko Yamaguchi, the film actress of Japan died due to heart failure on 7 September 2014. She was 94. She was known as Rikoran and Shirley Yamaguchi in the US.
  • Freedom fighter and veteran journalist Jitendra Chandra Paul died on 11 September 2014 at B.R. Ambedkar Medical College in Agartala, Tripura. He was 101.
