Awards

An award is something given to a person, a group of people, or an organization to recognize their excellence in a certain field; a certificate of excellence. Awards are often signified by trophies, titles, certificates, commemorative plaques, medals, badges, pins, or ribbons. An award may carry a monetary prize given to the recipient; for example, the Nobel Prize for contributions to society or the Pulitzer Prize for literary achievements. An award may also simply be a public acknowledgment of excellence, without any tangible token or prize.

Awards of India


Bharat Ratna Award:


Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the Republic of India. Instituted on 2nd jan 1954, this award is given for exceptional work for the advancement of art, literature, science and in recognition of public service of the highest order. Any formal recommendations are not required for the award, though the recommendations can only be made by the Prime Minister of India to President. The maximum number of awards given in a particular year is restricted to three and the recipient receives a Certificate signed by the President and medallion with out any monetary grant.

The first recipients of the award were C. Rajagopalachari, C.V. Raman and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who were honoured in 1954.

Bharatiya Jnanpith Award:

It is given by Bharatiya Jnanpith for contribution to the enrichment of Indian Literature. The award carries with it a cash prize of Rs. 11 Lakh and a citation and a replica of Vagdevi(Saraswati).

starting with the Malayalam writer G. Sankara Krupa in 1965. Bengali writer Ashapoorna Devi is first women got this award in 1976.

                                  



Dadasaheb Phalke Award :

The award was instituted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in 1970 in the name of Dadasaheb Phalke, the grandfather of Indian Film field. The award is being given to veterans in the film field such as Actors, Actresses, Producers, Directors, Music Directors and other Technical experts. This award carries with it a cash prize of  1 million and shawl.

Other Honours and Awards



Padma Vibhushan:

This award is given exceptional and distinguished service in any field including services rendered by government servants.Is the second highest civilian award in the Republic of India. It consists of a medal and citation and is awarded by the President of India.The award was established by Presidential decree on 2nd jan 1954.  The first recipient of the award were Satyendra Nath Bose in the year 1954.

Padma Bhushan:

This award is given for distinguished services of a high order in any field, including service rendered by government servants. This is the third highest civilian award in the Republic of India. This award established on 2nd jan 1954 by the President of India. Ajudhia Nath Khosla is the first recipient of the award in 1954.



Padma Shri:

This award is given for distinguished services in any field including the Arts,Education, Industry, Literature, Science, Sports, Medicine, Public Affairs and service rendered by the government servants. The first recipient of the award were Dr. Bir Bhan Bhatia in the year 1954.



Param Vir Chakra:

The Param Vir Chakra is India's highest military decoration awarded for the highest degree of valour or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy.This was established on 26 January 1950. The award also carries a cash allowance for those under the rank lieutenant and, in some cases, a cash award. The pension is transferred to the widow until her death or remarriage. By March 1999, the stipend stood at Rs. 1500 per month. The first recipient of the award were Major Somnath Sharma in the year 1947.



Gallantry Awards:

Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Shaurya Chakra awards are given for acts of conspicuous gallantry.

Vishisht Seva Medals:


Param Vishisht Seva medal, Ati Vishisht Seva medal, Vishisht Seva Medals are awarded to personnel of three services in recognition of distinguished service of the 'most exceptional', 'exceptional' and 'high' order respectively.


Jeevan Raksha Awards:

Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Jeevan Raksha Padak are awarded for meritorious acts of a humane nature displayed in saving a person from drowning, fire and rescue operations in mines etc,



Arjuna Awards:

Arjuna award is the highest honour in the field of sports. It was instituted in 1961. the award carries a cash prize of 500,000, a bronze statuette of Arjuna and scroll. The government has recently revised the scheme for the Arjuna award is a sports person should not only have had good performance consistently for the previous three years at the International level with excellence for the year for which the award is recommended.

Aryabhata Award:

This award was instituted by the Astronautical Society of India and given to persons committed to the promotion of Astronautics in 1961.

Rajiv Gandhi Memorial National Award:

These awards were instituted by the All India Feroze Gandhi Memorial Society and are given to prominent personalities for their outstanding achievements in various walks of life.

Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award:

The award was instituted in 1992 to mark the golden jubilee of the Quit India Movement and is given to persons for their outstanding contribution to national harmony.

Kalidas Samman:

This award was instituted by Madhya Pradesh Government and is given to artists and musicians for their outstanding contribution.




Dronacharya Award:

This award was instituted in 1985 and is given to eminent coaches who have successfully trained in international sports persons and teams. The award comprises a bronze statuette of Dronacharya, a scroll of honour and a cash component of Rs. 500,000.
